A Passaic County grand jury indicted a city man accused of striking and killing a 16-year-old boy in a hit-and-run accident on Beech Street in August 2015, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office.

James Reinhardt, 34-year-old, was indicted on Tuesday by a grand jury on second-degree knowingly leaving the scene of a fatal car accident, third-degree endangering an injured victim, and causing death while driving on a suspended license, authorities said.

Authorities charged Reinhardt on the same three counts when he surrendered to police two days after the incident and while an intense manhunt was taking place.

Reinhardt is accused of striking 16-year-old Javier Burgos with his 2006 Volkswagen Jetta while the youth was riding his bicycle at the intersection of Beech and Oak streets on August 10, 2015 at around 6:54 p.m., according to authorities.

Burgos was taken to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center for treatment, but died from his injuries less than an hour later at 7:26 p.m., authorities said. Reinhardt fled the scene of the accident.

Reinhardt could face 20 years behind bars if convicted on the charges, authorities said.
