The John P. Holland Charter School raised $12,000 earlier in the month at its annual tricky tray fundraiser at the Brownstone House attended by 350 people, according to the school.

At the event, the school also recognized instructional assistant Cierra Tillman (pictured, right) with its “Extra Mile” award and third grade teacher Caitlin Mader (pictured, left) with its teacher of the year award.

A city resident Tillman works at the school’s Special Education Department. She received the recognition for putting in extra time and effort to make the school a better place.

“Every day she works with our struggling students in the middle school. She has tremendous compassion and determination to help our special needs children,” Christina Scano, principal of John P. Holland Charter School, said.

Scano (pictured, center) also applauded Mader for making a “positive difference” in children’s lives. Mader, an Oakland resident, has worked at the school for the past five years. Mader and Tillman were selected for the awards by their colleagues.

Money raised at the annual fundraising event will be used to purchase new furniture for the school library.

“The people who attend our fundraiser are doing more than just helping the school financially, They are making a statement about their support for Charter Schools in New Jersey and about supporting choice in education and the chance to give children a better future,” Scano said.
