A Staten Island man received a 16-year prison sentence on Friday afternoon for assaulting and attempting to kidnap his former girlfriend at a city home, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office.
David Correa was sentenced by New Jersey Superior Court Judge Scott Bennion. Correa was found guilty of second-degree attempted kidnapping, aggravated assault, third-degree aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose by a jury on February 8, 2016, authorities said.
Correa attacked his ex-girlfriend A.G. with a wooden baseball bat and attempted to kidnap her while she was on her way to work from her city residence on July 8, 2013. The victim testified Correa struck her on the head with the baseball bat and dragged her to her car in an attempt to force her inside.
The victim screamed and fought. Her ex-boyfriend ended up stuffing a wig she was wearing inside her mouth to muffle her cries for help. Correa fled the scene when neighbors came to her help.
Police found a bloody baseball bat, a backpack with a cellphone belonging to Correa and two sets of handcuffs, authorities said.
Correa is required to serve 85-percent of his sentence before parole eligibility. The victim was present during the sentencing, authorities said.
