An 18-year-old city man and two boys were apprehended on carjacking charges after a vehicle pursuit through city streets on Saturday evening, according to police.

The three teenagers allegedly carjacked a woman at the intersection of Paterson and Straight Streets at about 6:10 p.m.

Police identified the 18-year-old as city resident Lowan Henry.

The three took possession of the victim’s 1999 Toyota Avalon and fled via Straight Street towards River Street which resulted in an alert being issued to all officers to be on the lookout for the stolen vehicle.

Rookie police officers Hector Mendez and Daniela Randion spotted the vehicle little after 8 p.m. on North Main Street and Haledon Avenue.

Mendez and Randion attempted to stop the vehicle, but the three suspects refused to obey and triggered a vehicle pursuit. The chase ended when the suspects crashed the vehicle on Rosa Parks Boulevard and Governor Street at about 8:18 p.m., said police director Jerry Speziale.

Two of the suspects ran out of the vehicle and began to flee on foot. Speziale said lieutenant George Vazquez coordinated the pursuit and had more officers respond to the scene.

Police chased two suspects through a yard before capturing them; the third suspect was arrested at the scene.

All three were charged with carjacking, possession of stolen property, and resisting arrest by flight,

“The coordination between the officers brought this dangerous situation to a successful conclusion,” said Speziale.
