The Delta Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity is hosting its first dance competition this Friday at International High School.

The competition is a both a dance and step contest with three dance and three step groups taking part. Each category will be judged separately. The winners will get trophies and group with the highest overall score will receive a $500 grand prize.

Friday’s competition is an overgrowth of the fraternity’s successful Alpha’s Black & Gold Idol, a solo vocalist competition, going on for 11 years. Modeled after the American Idol, the competition produced vocal talents, that have auditioned for Sony Records and  Atlantic Records.

Some even received free studio recording sessions with Grammy nominated producer and Paterson native Just Blaze. Falisha Farrar, runner up in 2005, recently finished recording her first gospel album; Nicole Ortiz, grand prize winner in 2006, is working on her first album; Tiayna Cedillo, grand prize winner in 2012, is a contestant on the reality show Chasing Destiny hosted by former Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland.

Ortiz also finished second place in the Apollo Theatre’s National Amateur Night competition in 2014.

Tickets go for $10.

Money raised will go towards funding college scholarships for males graduating seniors. Since 1971, the local fraternity awarded $85,000 in scholarships to students,

Sidney Turner is the chapter’s president and the show’s organizer is Dale “Skip” Van Rensalier. For additional information, please contact Van Rensalier at (201) 306-3215 or via at email: [email protected].
