A city man was charged with gun possession and another was arrested on an outstanding warrant during a motor vehicle stop on Rosa Parks Boulevard early Saturday morning, according to Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik.

Aaryn Abrams, 19, and Shamaad Eleby, 22, were arrested during the motor vehicle stop on Rosa Parks Boulevard between Franklin and Lafayette streets at around 2:30 a.m. Abrams was a front seat passenger inside the vehicle pulled over by Cpl. Craig Goodson, Deputy Adam Chaabane, and Officer Luis Pagan.

Abrams exited the vehicle upon sight of the officers and ran to the rear of 87 Rosa Parks Boulevard. Pagan chased right behind him until the suspect was in custody. As he ran from Pagan Abrams allegedly threw a Taurus .45 caliber from his waistband into the grass.

The car’s driver was issued four summonses, an ordinance violation, and his car was towed, authorities said. Eleby, another passenger in the vehicle, was found with an active municipal court warrant.

Abrams and Eleby were arrested and transported to police lockup.

“By literally taking a loaded handgun of our streets, a potential violent situation was avoided,” Berdnik said.
