The city’s school district in partnership with the municipal government opened its Extended Learning Opportunity Program, a blended program to allow dropouts to obtain their high school diplomas or equivalency certificates.

Students, who will be required to have 30 high school credits, will be provided online and in-class instructions.

The program will develop a personalized learning plan for each of the students to ensure success in the program. Students will receive face-to-face instruction, tutoring assistance, have weekly conference with teachers, and receive online technical support if needed.

“This new program will provide an alternative path for the young men and women of Paterson who gave up on school for one reason or another, but who want the opportunity to try again,” said state-appointed district superintendent Donnie Evans. “Certainly, their best chance for success in this highly competitive, global world begins with earning a high school diploma.”

The program is being run out of the Paterson Public Access Studio on Ellison Street which will serve as a technology hub for city residents. The Paterson Virtual Library will share space with the program providing residents with access to digital books, audio books, online magazines, and digitized newspapers from around the world.

“We are very proud of this collaboration with the Paterson Public Schools and happy to offer Paterson students the most up to date tools and resources through the virtual library,” said mayor Jose “Joey” Torres. “This extended reach beyond the classroom is a great opportunity that will help students in all aspects of their school experience and hopefully, will help prepare them with the necessary skills to pursue higher education and, or  enter the competitive job market of the 21st century.”

So far, 10 students have enrolled into the program, more are expected to follow. Any student who has dropped out of school and is interested in obtaining his high school diploma or GED should contact to the school district to enroll into the program.

Interested students should contact Nicole Payne, director of alternative education at the district, at (973) 321-0324.
