1 charter school advances for Paterson while 3 rejected

Out of the four charter schools that put in applications earlier in the year to open in the city, three have been rejected and one has advanced, according to the New Jersey Department of Education.
Only the College Achieve Paterson Charter School advanced to the next round of reviews while the Global Learning Charter School, MIGHT Leadership Elementary Charter School, and Paterson Dual Language Public Charter School were rejected.
The Paterson Dual Language Public Charter School was disqualified while the other two were denied, according to the state.
College Achieve Paterson Charter School is the biggest school of the group. The school is looking to open Pre-K-1 with 5, 6 and progress to Pre-K to 9th grade with 314 and 1,038 students, according to the state.
The school’s operator is Michael Piscal, who runs College Achieve Central Charter School out of Plainfield. The school has to undergo a more comprehensive Phase Two review prior to receiving an initial approval in September and a possible final charter in July of next year.
In all, 24 charter schools sought to open in the state, of which, 9 advanced to the next round of reviews, while the rest were denied, disqualified or withdrew. Of the big cities: four sought to open in Newark, only one advanced. In Jersey City there was one application which advanced to the next phase.
