Paterson public schools moved a step closer to opening the first International Baccalaureate World School in Passaic County after the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) accepted the district’s application to run the rigorous academic program out of International High School.

The Swiss-based International Baccalaureate Organization notified the district that it met all relevant program standards and practices last Tuesday. International High School, which is currently in the second year of the three-year application process, is a step closer to offering the IB Diploma Program (DP) for high achieving 16 to 19 year olds.

“I am thrilled that our application has met all of the expectations of the International Baccalaureate Organization and we are now one step closer to being a part of the IB world community!” Catherine Forfia-Dion, International Baccalaureate Coordinator for the district, said.

DP curriculum consists of the theory of knowledge (TOK), creativity, activity, service (CAS), and the extended essay. Students explore the nature of knowledge, conduct independent research, and complete projects that involve community service.

International High School has 37 freshman in an accelerated program prepared to enroll into the DP program upon final approval. 40 other students will enter the district’s “Accelerated Cohort International” program in anticipation of the IB program for the 2016-2017 school year.

“This program puts Paterson at the forefront of educating children to be leaders in the expanding global economy and international relations,” state-appointed district superintendent Donnie Evans said. “I am extremely pleased about this latest news and the entire community can be proud that our district is well on its way to becoming the first in Passaic County to offer this prestigious curriculum to our students.”

Application for the Accelerated Cohort program will be available at the district website at the beginning of March every year. Students are assessed based on live interview, standardized exam scores, teacher recommendations, and other criteria.
