Two men were wounded in separate overnight shootings in different parts of the city, according to police.

Police said a 21-year-old city man was wounded in the abdomen at about 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday on North Main and East Main Streets. He was with a group of people at the Cobb Park when an altercation occurred resulting in a suspect producing a handgun and firing shots that wounded the victim.

One mile from the park, a 32-year-old Ridgefield man suffered multiple gunshot wounds on 10th Avenue and East 19th Street at about 2:40 a.m. on Thursday, according to police.

“At this time it appears that the victim was exiting an area residence when he heard multiple gunshots fired, and was struck multiple times,” said police director Jerry Speziale. “The victim attempted to flee the area on foot but collapsed due to his injuries and was located by responding officers.”

Police said the 32-year-old man was taken to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center for treatment. The 21-year-old arrived at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center via private vehicle just minutes after police responded to reports of gunfire at the park.

Both men are in critical but stable condition, said the director.

The city has experienced an uptick in violence this month after a quiet June and July. In the past weekend, four people were wounded in two separate shootings.

“The department will address areas of concern with relentless follow up to avoid further incidents,” said Speziale.
