Detectives arrested a city man and seized a revolver and hollow point bullets early Saturday morning at the intersection of Belmont Avenue and North 9th Street, said police director Jerry Speziale.

Police said Nashear Albert, 23, was congregating at the corner with a group of people at about 1:30 a.m., when he was told to place his hands in the air after detectives spotted a gun on his waistband.

Albert ran. Detective Anthony Castronova and detective sergeant Richard LaTrecchia gave chase. He was pursued down Belmont Avenue to North 6th Street. He allegedly discarded the .22 caliber fully loaded revolver.

Police recovered the weapon and arrested Albert. He was charged with weapons offenses, possession of hollow point bullets, and resisting arrest.

Detectives William Niebanck and Pete Torres searched the area and recovered numerous 9mm rounds after checking the vicinity of where the group had gathered, but no other weapons were found.

“The Street Crime Unit will continue to focus their efforts on designated crime hot spots throughout the city in their continued effort to suppress violent crime at these locations,” said Speziale. “The unit has been vigorously patrolling the hotspot areas in an effort to remove illegal weapons from our streets.”
