The city is paying tribute to longtime former Passaic County freeholder Walter W. Porter Jr. by naming a portion of East 25th Street between 9th and 10th Avenues to Walter W. Porter Jr. Way.

Porter was elected to the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders in 1980. He was re-elected seven times thereafter. He served in U.S. Army fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart.

After World War II, he worked as a patrolman in the Paterson Police Department from 1945 to 1953. He served as the president of the Police Benevolent Association (PBA) Local #1. Then worked for the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office and the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office. He worked as the captain of detectives in the prosecutor’s office from 1960-79.

The city council approved a resolution to name that portion of East 25th Street in his honor on Tuesday night.

“He lived in the fourth ward until 2013,” said Ruby Cotton, 4th Ward councilwoman. “He’s been there since 1941.” He died at the age of 94 on March 14th, 2013.

“He fought in World War II. He was a proud Patersonian and a proud 4th Ward resident,” said Andre Sayegh, 6th Ward councilman.

Porter was born and raised in the Silk City. He lived his entire life in Paterson.
