Detectives are investigating a shooting that struck two people on Godwin Avenue on Friday afternoon forcing a nearby school to go into lock-down, according to authorities.

Gunfire rang out on Godwin Avenue between Rosa Parks Boulevard and Carrol Street at around 2:43 p.m. as area schools were preparing for dismissal.

Police found one person shot at the scene and a second person walked into St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Three blocks from the shooting scene, School 6 was on lock-down delaying dismissal, according to officials.

“We kept all the staff and students in until police gave the okay because we didn’t know whether the gunman was still at large,” said Smith. There were a number of parents who came to the school to pick up their students as the shooting was occurring on Godwin Avenue. He said those parents were allowed to sign and pick up their students.

Police have not released details of the shooting. Victim located at the scene was taken to hospital by ambulance.
