43-year-old Frank Saggese of East Hanover has arrested for allegedly stealing a vehicle with three children inside from the downtown Paterson parking lot of Wendy’s restaurant on Friday morning, according to police.

Police director Jerry Speziale said Saggese jumped into a car which had three children in the backseat ages 2, 4, and 5 at the parking lot of 145 Broadway at about 8:11 a.m.

The mother grabbed onto the steer-wheel, but was dragged as the alleged carjacker drove off with the vehicle. A concerned resident observed the incident and followed the suspect to 23 Goffle Road in Hawthorne, where Saggese took the children out of the car and continued to drive off.

Hawthorne police located the children at about 8:29 a.m. and notified Paterson police. The children were not injured and were taken to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center via ambulance for re-unification with the mother being treated for her injuries.

Saggese continued driving to a 7-Eleven at 92 Goffle Road. He abandoned the stolen vehicle and allegedly stole another unoccupied car from the parking lot. Police from both Hawthorne and Paterson alerted neighboring towns of the incident and issued an alert to all law enforcement agencies in New Jersey with year, make, model, and color of the second vehicle.

Police in Paramus recovered the vehicle at the Garden State Plaza and arrested Saggese at about 10 a.m.

Police ask anyone with information to contact Abe Hamdeh, Rick Vazquez, and Anthony Petrazuollo at 973-321-1120.
