The city is reducing speed limit by five miles on Grand Street between Morris and New Streets to for an “improved traffic safe environment for the kids.”
Council members approved an ordinance reducing speed limit on that section of Grand Street from 25 miles an hour to 20 miles an hour, according to the ordinance approved on November 22nd, 2016.
This stretch of Grand Street presently has International High School. Soon, the Paterson Arts and Science Charter School will occupy 225 Grand Street.
“The reason for this is for the safety of the children at International High School and the Paterson charter school,” said Maritza Davila, councilwoman at-large.
Luis Velez, 5th Ward councilman, said motorists seldom slowdown while driving up and down the hill on Grand Street. “People don’t stop. This will force people to go at the speed they are supposed to. Enforcement is key.”
