The construction company that built the Dr. Hani Awadallah Elementary School and the pedestrian bridge over the New Jersey Transit rail line won a national award for its work from the Construction Management Association of America.

New York City-based STV, Inc. won the project achievement award for buildings, new construction category on October 18, 2016. The project was one of 13 recognized by the association for “raising the bar” in construction management.

“CMAA’s project achievement award winners manage to raise the bar higher and higher every year. This year’s distinguished collection of award winners is no exception,” Bruce D’Agostino, president of the Construction Management Association of America, said.

Students began classes at the two-story, 105,500 square-foot school in September. The building cost the New Jersey School Development Authority (SDA) $55.2 million to build. The builder had to work with NJ Transit to place a footbridge over the rail line to allow students safe passage to and from school.

“The bridge was placed during a three-and-a-half-hour window in the middle of the night in order to not disrupt NJ Trainst’s commuter schedule or the local community,” John Brooks, project manager for STV, said in a news release. “The neighbors went to bed one Saturday night and the next morning there was a bridge in place at the school next door.”

The company invited some neighbors to watch the feat as employees placed the bridge connecting a neighborhood divided by the train tracks. School officials chattered much about the aesthetic beauty of the new light blue and beige building at the intersection of Hazel and Marshall streets.

STV is more than 100 years old. It provides construction management, architectural, planning, engineering, environmental services for buildings, transportation systems, infrastructure, energy and other facilities.

The company is 100-percent employee-owned.
