While driving through downtown Paterson to get work on New Year’s Eve, Passaic County Sheriff’s Office correction officer Anthony Bua saw a man knock another down to the ground and stand over him with a black handgun outside of a Main Street electronics store.

Bua, in full uniform in his personal vehicle, saw the victim on the ground at about 11:45 p.m. covering his face as the suspect — Xiair Lampley, 20 of Paterson — pointed the gun at his face. He got out of his vehicle, identified himself as a law enforcement officer, and drew his weapon.

Lampley stepped away from the victim and began to run. Bua ordered him to stop. Lampley halted, dropped his handgun through a security gate, and remained with his hands up on the gate.

Bua approached, commanded him to get on the ground, and place his hands behind his back. He placed handcuffs on Lampley and took him into custody. A search of his person did not yield a weapon. He contacted the Paterson Police dispatch for assistance.

City police officers responded to 226 Main Street. A handgun, which turned out to be an imitation, was recovered. Lampley — who was charged with robbery, having an imitation firearm for unlawful purpose, and possession of other weapon for an unlawful purpose — was taken and processed at the Passaic County Sheriff’s headquarters in Wayne. He was then taken to the Passaic County Jail.

“I want to commend Officer Bua for his quick action, in stopping a crime and then making an arrest,” remarked Passaic County sheriff Richard Berdnik.

Bua has been working as a correctional officer at the Passaic County Jail since 2012, according to public records.
