Paterson man charged with murder in Godwin Avenue shooting

30-year-old city resident Domenick Deavereux was arrested on Tuesday morning and charged with murder and weapons offenses in connection with a November shooting on Godwin Avenue, according to police.

Authorities arrested Deavereux at about 8:15 a.m. on Franklin and Summer Streets. He is accused of shooting and killing 31-year-old Antonio Johnson and wounding a 26-year-old man on November 18th, 2016 on Rosa Parks Boulevard and Godwin Avenue. Police responded to the area at about 2:45 p.m. and found Johnson with a gunshot wound inside a red Cadillac that crashed into a parked car.

Johnson was taken to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center for medical care, but did not survive his injuries and was pronounced dead, according to police.

Deavereux’s second victim arrived at the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. He remains in critical, but stable condition at the hospital, said police.

Paterson police and Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office detectives determined there were two shooting scenes close to each other. Police said Johnson was shot at on Rosa Parks Boulevard and Godwin Avenue which resulted in him crashing his vehicle.

A second shooting scene was found mid-block on Godwin Avenue between Rosa Parks Boulevard and Carroll Street.

City detectives arrested Deavereux this morning with assistance from the U.S. Marshals and the New Jersey Parole.
