A 16-year-old boy was killed and a 17-year-old was wounded in a shooting on Auburn Street, said police.

Police said both teenagers were shot inside 87 Auburn Street at about 5 p.m. on Saturday. Police officers rendered medical assistance to both victims before both were taken by ambulance to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center emergency room.

16-year-old died from injuries sustained in the shooting and the 17-year-old was treated and released, according to police.

It’s not clear what the two boys were doing inside the ramshackle building known in the neighborhood as a crackhouse. Ruby Cotton, 4th Ward councilwoman, who represents the area where the incident occurred, said the building is not abandoned. She said she saw lights on both floors last night when she visited the scene after the shooting.

Cotton said people are living inside the building. The building appears abandoned from the outside.

“There’s a major problem there,” said Cotton speaking about the area. Police have conducted numerous drug busts at the location over the past year.

Detectives from the Paterson Police Department and the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office have been conducting interviews with families and canvassing the neighborhood.

The area where the two teens were shot is known for drugs, gangs, and violence. Less than a month ago, a 26-year-old man was shot in leg and torso inside the first floor of 87 Auburn Street.

A group of people were sweeping up the area in front of the building on Sunday morning. “Go get the shooter. He can tell you all the information,” said a woman, who did not provide her name, at the scene of the shooting on Sunday morning. “People are aggravated and mourning here.”

A woman who another at the scene said was the aunt of the boy killed yesterday afternoon did not wish to speak to a reporter.

Paterson has had, including this incident, nine shootings in 2017. Seven were wounded and three killed in the city this year so far.

“I think they are working really hard with what they have got,” Cotton speaking about police. “They are working hard.” She said police have targeted the area with the Safe City Initiative to connect individuals to job training and social services.

Police ask anyone with information to contact lieutenant Daniel Rooney, detectives Mary Martinez, Benny Ramos or detectives Angel Perales, Anthony Aceste of the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office at 973-321-1120.
