A drunk taxi driver traveling south on Madison Avenue towards 21st Avenue was arrested early Sunday morning, according to Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik.

City resident Jose Moya-Garcia was found with a .17 blood alcohol content (BAC), authorities said. Sheriff’s officer Carlos Aymat pulled over the black taxicab on 21st and Madison avenues at about 4:21 a.m.

Strong smell of alcohol was coming from inside the car and the driver’s mouth, authorities said. An open container of “Remy” was on the front passenger seat, Aymat observed. Moya-Garcia was arrested for DWI (driving while intoxicated).

“Taxi patrons should not have to wonder if their driver is drunk. This suspect could have caused considerable harm to his passengers and to the general public,” Berdnik said.
