An on-duty police officer fired “multiple times” at an allegedly armed man on Fulton Place killing him, the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office said on Saturday night.

Authorities said police officers were dispatched to a residence on Fulton Place and East 16th Street at around 1:40 p.m. on Friday when the officers encountered a man allegedly armed with a handgun.

“During the encounter, an on-duty Paterson Police Officer discharged his service weapon multiple times,” the prosecutor’s office said.

The wounded man was taken to a local hospital for treatment and passed away at the hospital, authorities said. The regional medical examiner in Newark has conducted a post-mortem examination, authorities said.

Authorities recovered a handgun at the scene. Authorities said the investigation into the police-involved shooting remains ongoing.
