Police arrested 37-year-old Segundo Paul Ocon on Thursday morning and charged him with murder for stabbing a city man on Market Street six days ago, said police director Jerry Speziale.

Ocon is also charged with weapons offenses. He is accused of stabbing 48-year-old Jose E. Barriga at 410 Market Street on Friday at about 2:30 a.m.

Barriga was taken to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center for treatment, but died as a result of his injuries. He is the fourth fatal stabbing in Paterson this year. There have been 14 homicides in 2017. The city had 19 murders in 2016.

Police did not release information about the circumstance that led to the stabbing. Police officers responded to a stabbing at the location to find Barriga covered in blood.

Detective lieutenant Dan Rooney, detective sergeant Joe Delgado, detectives Benny Ramos, Jason English, Mary Martinez, and Passaic County Prosecutor’s detective Sabrina McKoy investigated the incident that led to Ocon’s arrest.

Detectives from the Paterson Police Department, the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, and the U.S. Marshals Service arrested Ocon at about 7 a.m. at an East 27th Street house.
