A city man and a woman were wounded in a shooting on Jefferson Street early Sunday evening, according to police.

Police said the victims – 21-year-old man and 22-year-old woman – were traveling in their car through North 1st and Jefferson Streets at about 7 p.m. when shots were fired. The man was in the driver’s seat and the woman in the passenger seat when gunfire struck them inside their vehicle.

The man was wounded in the leg and the woman in the foot, said police. The driver of the vehicle left the immediate area of the shooting for safety and requested police assistance from Paterson and Governor Streets.

Both victims were transported to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center for treatment. Police said both are in stable condition.

This was the second shooting within a 24-hour span in the city. 23 hours earlier, a 16-year-old boy was wounded in a shooting close to the corner of Totowa and Paterson Avenues.

Including the two weekend incidents, Paterson has had 34 shootings in 2017. 33 people have been wounded in those shootings. 14 people have been killed in both shootings and stabbings this year.

Detectives are investigating the incident. Anyone with information is being asked to contact detectives Rolando Polio and Edgar Torres of the Ceasefire Unit at 973-321-1342 or anonymously send information through PatersonPD.com.
