The city council approved $218,750 on Friday afternoon extending contracts with 11 private law firms that handle a variety of cases ranging from tax appeals to workers compensation.

Increases for the firms cover the first three months of the 2018 fiscal year until new contracts are awarded.

Council members increased the contracts for Fairfield-based Dwyer Connell and Lisbona and Toms River-based Gilmore and Monahan by $25,000 each. Both firms were awarded $100,000 contracts each in June 2016 to serve as litigation counsel for the city.

The council extended the contracts of nine other firms by $18,750 each:

The city is paying the firms $125 per hour for state cases and $135 per hour for federal cases.

Councilman Kenneth Morris made a request to have representatives of the firms come before the council to discuss pending cases.

Robert Brigliadoro, 1st assistant corporation counsel, said the city will invite the lawyers in to discuss pending cases with the council.

The extensions run from July 1st through September 20th, 2017.
