A city man was arrested on Thursday and charged with robbing a bank in Paterson and another in Clifton, according to federal authorities.

James M. Chestnut, 62-year-old, allegedly robbed an Investors Bank in Clifton and a TD Bank in Paterson, authorities said. He allegedly gave the teller of the Paterson bank a note that said, “Put 100s and 50s in the envelope. No dye pack.”

Chestnut allegedly struck the TD Bank on June 30, 2017. On July, 5, 2017, he allegedly entered the Clifton bank and brandished a firearm to the teller.

“Open your drawer. Give me your money. All the 100s. Don’t call the cops or I’ll shoot you,” he allegedly told the teller of the Investors Bank.

Chestnut has experience robbing banks, according to authorities. He was convicted of two federal bank robberies from 1996 and 2004. He allegedly took $700 from the Paterson and $3,774 from the Clifton banks, according to federal charging documents.

Chestnut faces a maximum of 45 years in prison if convicted of both robbery counts. Both counts carry a $250,000 fine, or twice the gross gain or loss from the offense, authorities said.
