The busy Paterson emergency medical service is getting four new ambulances for $800,000, according to municipal officials. Funds to cover the purchase are coming from the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program.

Fire chief Brian McDermott on Wednesday said the new ambulances will replace four existing vehicles. He said the fire department handled 37,000 ambulance runs in 2017.

Paterson has 16 ambulances in its fleet. It serves a number of surrounding towns. Council members approved the purchase on Tuesday night.

First Priority Emergency Vehicles of Manchester Township was awarded the contract for four Demers Type 1 F-450 MXP 150 4X4 ambulances.

McDermott said the new ambulances will be in service by April.
