The New Jersey Working Families Alliance, a political organization that four years ago successfully convinced the municipal council to pass an earned sick time ordinance, endorsed councilman Andre Sayegh for mayor on Tuesday morning.
“As a councilman, Andre Sayegh has proven his commitment to equality and justice for all people, and to making Paterson a city where working families can raise their children in a diverse, thriving community,” said Analilia Mejia, executive director of the New Jersey Working Families Alliance, citing some of his work in the 6th Ward. “Andre has opened preschools and has made the streets safer. He worked to have homeowners released from paying thousands of dollars a year in unnecessary flood insurance, helping them afford to stay in their homes.”
Mejia’s group is known for advocating for workers and their families.
“Paterson has always been a city of hard working families, and they deserve a mayor who will work just as hard for them,” said Sayegh. “We are doing that in the sixth ward, and with the support of the New Jersey Working Families Alliance, we can make our city work for all Patersonians.”
Sayegh was one of the council members to vote in favor of an ordinance to force private firms to provide one-hour of sick time for every 30 hours worked employees.
“He is the leader Paterson needs now to ensure a future of opportunity and prosperity for all of Paterson’s diverse communities,” said Mejia.
