The city’s school district is conducting a search for a deputy superintendent. More than a dozen people have applied for the $175,000 job, according to district officials.

Superintendent Eileen Shafer said she expects to present her pick for deputy at the next regular meeting of the school board later this month.

Shafer last month said a committee, made up of central office administrators, conducted preliminary interviews of the candidates.

The deputy superintendent position has been held by Susana Peron since last July. Peron is among the applicants for the deputy’s post.

Shafer would not say how many people have applied for the second most powerful post in the district.

Longtime school board member Jonathan Hodges inquired about the deputy search at a public meeting in April. Shafer at the time told him 14 people had applied for the job.

Shafer said the district advertised the job. She is following the same process as her predecessor, Donnie Evans, she said.

Evans selected Shafer as his deputy following a similar search in 2012.

School board members will have to approve the deputy superintendent appointment during their routine vote on the superintendent’s personnel recommendations.
