In an effort to put more police officers on the streets, mayor Andre Sayegh reorganized his security detail to free up two patrol officers.
Both officers will be put on the street to combat crime. Typically, the mayor has three senior patrol officers assigned to his office for security detail.
Police director Jerry Speziale’s office will assume the mayoral security detail duties. Speziale said officers, who handle statistics and accreditation for police in his office, will handle the mayor’s security on an as-needed basis.
Previously, police officers assigned to the mayoral security detail would station themselves at City Hall on standby. The City Hall building always had a security detail of its own, said Speziale.
“I want to thank Police Director Jerry Speziale for his demonstration of commitment to making Paterson streets safer. By taking this extra responsibility, Director Speziale and his team have shown that they believe, as I do, that a stronger Paterson starts with a safer Paterson,” said Sayegh.
The city brought on 24 police officers this month. Sayegh has said a new class will be sworn in later this month.
