Paterson voters’ guide for Nov. 6, 2018

The city’s voters will pick five school board candidates and vote on referendum to select whether to have elected or appointed Board of Education members. Residents of the 6th Ward will pick a councilman to replace mayor Andre Sayegh.

Board of Education

Ten candidates are vying for three available full-term school board seats. Winners will serve three years.

Voters are expected to pick three candidates for full-term seats.

Seven candidates are running for two short-term or unexpired school board seats.

Voters are expected to pick two candidates for the short-term seats.

Asterisk (*) denotes incumbent.

Referendum

Voters will be asked to select a Type 1 or Type 2 school district.

In Type 1, the mayor appoints school board members and school board budget is determined by a separate Board of School Estimate.

In Type 2, residents elect Board of Education members and budget is determined by that board and approved by voters when the law requires.

The referendum is part of the Paterson school district shedding state control after 27 years.

6th Ward

Voters in the 6th Ward will pick a councilman to serve out the rest of Sayegh’s term.

Two candidates are running for the seat.

Abdelaziz currently represents the 6th Ward. He was appointed by the City Council to fill the vacancy created by Sayegh’s mayoral election victory.

Other races

Also, voters will be asked to pick a U.S. Senator, a member of the House of Representatives, Passaic County Clerk, and three Members of the Board of Chosen Freeholders.

Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.

Any person who believes his right to vote has been interfered with or wishes to report irregularities or voting-related problems or concerns should contact the New Jersey Attorney General’s hotline at 1-877-NJVOTER.
