Sayegh announces his road repair plan in front of the St. Bonaventure's Church on Ramsey Street.

The city has received a $5,000 grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities to revive its Grassroots Arts Commission (GRAC).

Funds will support the revival of the commission through redesigning its mission, vision, gathering resources, and hosting community forums. Grant will also pay hourly stipends to those involved in the planning and re-organization activities of the commission.

“We look for this grant to help GRAC members engage the larger Paterson community to capture, celebrate, remember, and embrace Paterson’s rich history through a multitude of arts and humanities lenses,” said mayor Andre Sayegh on Wednesday morning. “We are grateful to the New Jersey Council for the Humanities for this support – great things are in store for art and humanities in Paterson.”

The City Council approved a resolution accepting the grant funds on Tuesday night. Some members of the commission attended the meeting.

Sayegh appointed members to the dormant commission, which was established in 2012, late last year.

The small grant will allow the commission to market itself and revive its social media presence.

“When an organization is ready to tackle an interesting question that involves history, values, culture, or beliefs,” said Gigi Naglak, director of grants and programs at the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, in January. “Incubation Grant funding allows for exploration and experimentation. We’re proud to support these important projects that explore questions that affect us all.”

New Jersey Council for the Humanities awarded nine “incubation” grants worth $45,000 to nine organizations last month.
