After getting reports of shots fired on Straight and Fulton streets, police officers arrived at the scene and chased down a pair of suspects and seized two handguns early Friday morning, according to police director Jerry Speziale.

Kendell McKinney, 20, and Kyree Parks, 22, both of Paterson, were each charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, and resisting arrest.

McKinney was additionally charged with possession of high capacity magazine and possession of hollow point ammunition, police said.

Detectives arrived at the scene at around 1:20 a.m.

McKinney was observed holding a firearm in his wristband, police said.

Detective sergeant Richard LaTrecchia yelled to other officers to alert them of the weapon. McKinney and Parks began to run.

LaTrecchia gave chase. McKinney ran towards Harrison Street.

Detectives William Hermann and LaTrecchia arrested McKinney following a brief foot pursuit. As McKinney was taken to the ground a 9 mm handgun fell out of his waistband.

LaTrecchia quickly seized the weapon.

Detective Gilot Castor ran after Parks on Summer Street toward Governor Street. He was aided by patrolman Jonathan Traynor.

On Governor Street, Parks removed a handgun from his waistband and tossed it to the ground. Traynor secured the firearm while Castor continued the chase.

Detective John Farfan joined the chase.

Parks discarded his handgun’s magazine to the ground. Castor recovered the magazine from the ground.

Farfan continued to chase.

Parks was arrested outside 100 Governor Street, police said.

McKinney and Parks are being held pending a court hearing. Both weapons will be submitted to the New Jersey State Police Ballistics Lab for further examination.
