Longtime municipal court judge Gerald Keegan passed away on Thursday morning. He died of a heart attack.

Keegan was 64.

“It’s a great, great loss, not only for the municipal court, but the judiciary system. He was an outstanding judge,” said Manuel Quiles, director of the Paterson Municipal Court.

Quiles was in disbelief when he learned of Keegan’s passing.

“When I was told, I was like, ‘Please find out if we’re talking about our Jerry or somebody else’s Jerry,’” he said. “We were sitting in his chambers yesterday joking.”

Quiles said the judge went through some medical issues and lost a lot of weight. But on Wednesday, he was extremely jubilant in office.

“For some reason, he was joking around with the staff like he hasn’t in the past,” said Quiles.

Keegan served as a judge in the Paterson Municipal Court for 16 years.
