Students of the International High School’s International Baccalaureate (IB) program received more than $2 million in scholarship awards and acceptance to big-name colleges — including two Ivy League schools — all over the United States.

Some of the students were accepted to the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, Virginia Military Institute, The Citadel, University of Pittsburgh, Stevens Institute of Technology, Lehigh University, American University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

“This first class has worked diligently to meet the rigorous standards of IB coursework while focusing on making the world a better place in keeping with the vision and mission of International High School and the International Baccalaureate Organization,” Catherine Forfia-Dion, principal of the International Baccalaureate program, said.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) program started in September 2017. Its first graduating class is made up of 40 students, officials said.

“This is truly a landmark accomplishment for the IB Program at International High School and Paterson Public Schools,” superintendent Eileen F. Shafer said. “I have always believed that students can rise to meet any challenge that is put before them. I am so proud of these IB students because they saw beyond the challenges to recognize the tremendous opportunities in completing the IB program.”

Shafer thanked teachers, administrators, and parents for making the program successful.

The scholarship awards received by the 40 seniors are renewable each year, boosting their potential value to $8 million over a four-year period, officials said.

International High School is the only IB program in Passaic County. It is one of 15 in New Jersey.

The IB program was developed in Switzerland for the children of diplomats with the aim of turning students into global citizens. It teaches students to think “critically and independently” to “inquire with care and logic.”
