A city student has been accepted to an Ivy League school, according to Paterson Public School District officials.

Cindy Munoz, a student at the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at International High School, received an early decision to attend the University of Pennsylvania in Fall 2020.

“I’m very excited to live in a new city and experience what UPenn has to offer,” Munoz said in a press release. “I believe the IB Program at International High School has prepared me for the college environment through rigorous courses and an emphasis on time management.”

Munoz will study nursing at the University of Pennsylvania.

Munoz is a first generation Dominican-American. Her parents came to the United States from the Dominican Republic. Her father died when she was just seven. Her mother attended college in the Dominican Republic and stressed to the daughter the importance of getting an education. It worked.

“My favorite part was visiting the Library of Congress and being able to see Jefferson’s extensive collection of books,” Munoz said after a visit to Washington D.C. last year. She and other students went on the trip through the Paterson Youth Council.

Aside from being a part of the Paterson Youth Council, Munoz is involved in multiple clubs at International High School. She is involved in the IB Robotics, Chinese, and Anatomy clubs.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment and we are extremely proud of Ms. Munoz. We look forward to her future success at the University of Pennsylvania,” Eileen Shafer, superintendent of Paterson School District, said.
