Councilman Luis Velez

Councilman Luis Velez has canceled his campaign headquarter kickoff that was scheduled for Saturday afternoon over the new coronavirus.

“You never know who has the virus. People might be afraid to come out especially when the president declared a national emergency,” said Velez on Saturday. “I care about them and I don’t want to expose them. I want to be safe than sorry.”

Velez is seeking re-election for the 5th Ward seat on the City Council. He is facing two opponents, Ramon Joaquin and Ricardo Cuebas. He said the headquarter grand opening at 77 Park Avenue will be rescheduled in one or two weeks.

Municipal officials have closed down the Paterson Museum, cancelled Riverside Vets senior programs, and changed business and work hours at City Hall for the next two weeks over the new coronavirus.

Passaic County has two presumptive positive cases of Covid-19, according to the New Jersey Department of Health. First case was found in Clifton. It’s not clear which municipality has the second case.
