After getting complaints of street walkers soliciting people in vehicles and on foot in the area of Van Houten and East 18th streets, police conducted an operation on Saturday afternoon that yielded two arrests, according to public safety director Jerry Speziale.

Charlotte A. Best, 40, of Mount Arlington, and Denise Hernandez, 30, of Paterson, were arrested and charged with prostitution, police said.

Best was arrested on Van Houten and East 18th streets. Hernandez was arrested on Governor and Ann streets after a brief foot chase, police said. Hernandez allegedly solicited men on Carroll and Van Houten streets.

The area of Van Houten and East 18th streets is known for drugs, violence, and prostitution.
