Woman becomes Paterson’s first coronavirus death

A woman has died from the new coronavirus, making her the first fatality from Covid-19 in Paterson.

The woman, 69-year-old, died at the Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, according to health officer Paul Persaud. It is not known where the woman was exposed to the virus.

“This is a tragic time for the world. My condolences are extended to the family of the deceased,” said mayor Andre Sayegh on Sunday night.

She is the second person to die from the virus in Passaic County. On Saturday, an 86-year-old Passaic City man became the first fatality from the virus in Passaic County.

Municipal officials reported 28 case, up from 22, on Sunday. Passaic County had 95 cases, up from 67, on Sunday afternoon, according to the New Jersey Department of Health.

Clifton, with 33 people tested positive, has the most cases in Passaic County.

State health officials revealed 1,914 positive cases in New Jersey. 20 people have died from the virus as of Sunday.

Governor Phil Murphy has urged people to stay in their homes. He also closed all non-essential retail businesses in New Jersey.
