Councilwoman Lilisa Mimms gave out 9 tablets, 4 laptops, and 2,400 bottles of water amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Mimms said she held a contest in late March to give out the tablets and laptops. People had to enter the contest via her Facebook page. She gave one device to each grade level, K-12, she said.

“Each grade level will win,” said Mimms in late March, just before picking out the winners from a bowl. “Some kids need things to do.”

Youngsters will be able to use the devices to entertain themselves and to do their schoolwork, she said.

Mimms also gave out 10 Visa gift cards, each worth $25, to teachers. 1 gift card was given to a Passaic County Community College student. She said the devices and the gift cards cost her $2,230. Her campaign will cover the expenses, she said.

Last week, Mimms facilitated a donation of 100 cases or 2,400 bottles of water to various organizations and government agencies. Passaic County Sheriff’s Office, Paterson Police, Paterson Fire, Paterson Public Works each received 10 cases. A case contains 24 bottles.

“They are out there. They need to replenish themselves. The workers need water,” said Mimms.

St. Joseph’s emergency room received 20 cases. Grandparents Relative Care Resource Center received 10 cases, Fast Break Café received 10 cases, and a group home called Youth Consultation Service (YCS) received 10 cases.

Mimms said seniors throughout the city received 10 cases.

M. P. Plastics of South Paterson delivered the waters, said Mimms. She said the company paid for the donation as well. This is the same firm that gave care packages to 283 seniors last week. M. P. Plastics has been doing business in Paterson for 30 years.
