Video shows Paterson police firing at armed man after ordering him to drop weapon

A video captured by an eyewitness of Thursday’s police-involved shooting in Paterson shows an armed man pacing at the Carroll-Harrison intersection ignoring police orders to drop his weapon.

“Drop the f–king gun,” a police officer yells at the armed suspect. The unidentified suspect is seen in the video, gun in hand, walking in the direction of two police officer. One police officer, weapon drawn, takes cover behind an utility pole while another falls back as the suspect is seen walking towards them.

Several other police officers take cover behind their vehicles. Some spectators encourage police to shoot the suspect.

“Kill that n–ga,” yells a male voice.

“If he was black, ya’ll would have been shot that n–ga, man,” a male voice is heard saying in the video.

“Light that n–ga up,” yells a female voice.

The white suspect with a handgun continues to pace back and forth at the intersection.

“Once he raises it, they gonna shoot him,” a male voice is heard saying in the video. A female voice says he already raised the gun at police.

The suspect is seen raising his weapon and a series of shots are fired by police. The video appears to show the suspect returning fire. He falls to the ground.

The shooting took place outside of 50 Carroll Street at about 4:20 p.m. New Jersey Attorney General’s Office announced that it is investigating the incident.
