The police arrested two city man early Sunday morning and seized two handguns in an investigation in the corner of Carroll and Governor streets, according to public safety director Jerry Speziale.
Aa’zhone Edwin, 24, and Jamir Clark, 25, were both charged with weapons offenses, possession of high capacity magazine, and resisting arrest by flight.
Edwin and Clark were among a crowd of 100 people playing loud music and drinking alcohol at around 1 a.m. on Carroll and Governor streets.
Police officers saw the large crowd and exited their vehicle. They saw one man passing a handgun to another to place the weapon in a bag. Upon sight of police, both men fled on foot into the courtyard of the Inca Village Apartments with several others.
Police officers drove to another exit area to cut off the suspects. As police chased them, the suspects discarded their weapons. A weapon fell out of Edwin’s clothing as he fled. Clark threw the black bag he was seen placing the handgun in onto the porch of a residence.
Other police arrived on the scene. Both suspects were arrested. Police recovered a Glock .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun and a Zastava Arms 9 mm semi-automatic handgun. Both handguns contained high capacity magazines, police said.
Detectives Mustafa Dombayci, Mohammad Bashir, and officer James Iandoli made the successful arrests and recovery of the handguns.
“I commend their tireless efforts,” Speziale said. Recovery of the weapons likely prevented a “deadly incident,” he said.
