Mayor Andre Sayegh is letting retail businesses in most commercial zones in Paterson to conduct sidewalk sales to boost business amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Sayegh’s administration is letting retail shops in all Urban Enterprise Zone (UEZ) areas to conduct street sales from now through Labor Day.

Most commercial corridors in Paterson are within the UEZ. Market Street, Union Avenue, 21st Avenue, Main Street, and many others fall within the UEZ.

“We are introducing the street sale permit so businesses may have the opportunity to safely re-open in a way that is conducive for social distancing,” said Sayegh last Wednesday.

Economic development director Michael Powell said it’s a blanket permit so that businesses do not have to individually obtain permits to conduct sidewalk sales.

“The last thing you need is a bunch of red tape. People are struggling,” said Powell.

Powell said businesses still have to make sure customers are wearing masks and exercising social distancing.
