Congressman Bill Pascrell is in good health after undergoing a heart bypass procedure at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center over the weekend.

“We are grateful to report that Congressman Pascrell underwent a successful heart procedure Sunday to correct arterial blockages,” said Mark Greenbaum, a spokesman for Pascrell, in a statement on Monday morning. “Congressman Pascrell is feeling better and is eager to get back to work.”

Pascrell, 83, went to the hospital after experiencing indigestion and heartburn on Saturday. He also felt unexplained nausea.

Doctors found blockages in arteries during an examination.

“The procedure should allow the congressman to get back to his active lifestyle. While recovery varies from patient to patient, because of the congressman’s strength and normal heart function, I am confident that he will have a speedy recovery and be back serving the people of New Jersey within days,” said doctor Mark W. Connolly, chairman of the Department of Surgery at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, who performed the procedure.

Pascrell was also tested for Covid-19. His results came back negative. He also urged people to tend to their whole health and not be afraid to contact their doctors for non-coronavirus symptoms.

Pascrell is seeking the Democratic Party nomination in Tuesday’s primary to continue to represent New Jersey’s 9th Congressional District which includes Paterson.
