Paterson man getting 18-month prison sentence for pointing gun at another

A 30-year-old Paterson man, who admitted to pointing a gun at another man in a group last year, is receiving an 18-month prison sentence.
Erick Rodriguez pleaded guilty last Wednesday to a fourth-degree aggravated assault offense for pointing a weapon at a person.
On October 13, 2019, Rodriguez and three other people were arrested by police outside of 69 Madison Street. Police located a 9mm silver and black handgun inside a garbage receptacle after approaching the group.
Rodriguez admitted in court that the handgun belonged to him.
Earlier in the day, Rodriguez came across a group of people, with whom he had a dispute or street “beef,” according to an attorney in the case. He took out the weapon and pointed it at one or more of those people.
Rodriguez was charged with two weapons offenses and a certain persons not to have a weapon because of a prior conviction. His charges were downgraded to a fourth-degree aggravated assault offense.
Rodriguez also agreed to exculpate the three other men — Jose Vasquez, Edward Miranda, and Luis Garrido – who were arrested with him. He told authorities Vasquez, Miranda, and Garrido had no involvement with the weapon.
Rodriguez has to serve 18 months in prison without parole eligibility.
Sentencing is scheduled for September 18 before Passaic County Superior Court judge Justine Niccollai.
