A city man was arrested in possession of a semi-automatic handgun on 10th Avenue early Thursday morning after a foot chase, according to public safety director Jerry Speziale.

Akeem Tyre, 33-year-old, was observed “acting suspiciously” on 10th Avenue and East 22nd Street at around 12:15 a.m.

Tyre fled the area on foot upon seeing police. He allegedly discarded a large purple handgun on the roadway near a parked car and continued fleeing on East 22nd Street in the direction of 11th Avenue.

But he couldn’t run far. Police arrested him without an incident. Police said the weapon he discarded was a semi-automatic Taurus 9mm handgun.

Tyre was charged with weapons offenses. He is being held at the Passaic County Jail pending a court hearing.

Detectives Mohammad Bashir, Yamil Pimienta, and Mustafa Dombayci conducted the successful weapon recovery and arrest,
