Feds, Paterson police seize almost 1,000 bags of heroin in basement raid

The police and federal authorities raided a drug production facility run out of a basement on East 29th Street, arresting two people and seizing almost 1,000 glassine envelopes of heroin, according to public safety director Jerry Speziale.

Carlos Gomez, 42, and Thaisha Diaz, 36, were arrested on Wednesday. Both were charged with 12 drug offenses each for running the drug production facility out of the basement of 557 East 28th Street.

Police officers and members of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations conducted an investigation outside of 592 East 29th Street after receiving information Gomez was producing and dealing drugs out of the location.

Detectives observed Gomez exit the residence at 8:35 p.m. He allegedly had bricks of heroin in his hand. He entered a car and left the location.

An arrest team stopped him on 17th Avenue and East 31st Street. He allegedly had two bricks of heroin in his possession.

Detectives observed Diaz exit the residence at 9:35 p.m. She entered a car and left the area. An arrest team stopped her on Broadway and East 28th Street.

Detectives smelled marijuana after approaching the vehicle. Five bags of marijuana were seized.

Diaz is the mother of Gomez’s two children.

Authorities seized 982 doses of heroin in the form of 19 bricks, 2 bundles, and 2 glassines; 5 bags of marijuana weighing 41 grams; and 1 knotted bag of Fentanyl weighing 7 grams.

Police seized drug paraphernalia consistent with a drug manufacturing facility and recovered $2,892 in cash during the raid at around 12:40 a.m. on Thursday.
