School officials have decided to keep Paterson schools closed and learning all-remote until January 19.

“We are going to continue remote learning until January 19 because of the current situation. Numbers are going up,” said school board president Kenneth Simmons in announcing the decision.

Schools in Paterson did not open for in-person instruction in September. School board members had opted for remote learning for all students through October with a tentative in-person re-opening set for November 1 if daily coronavirus cases declined.

Simmons had said the school board would conduct an assessment whether to re-open in mid-October.

“There are some schools that have opened to do hybrid learning, to do in person learning and those schools have shut down,” said Simmons.

Simmons said the school board will conduct an assessment in mid-December to decide whether to re-open for in-person instructions in January.

“If the data is favorable, we will move forward with opening on January 19,” said Simmons.
