Municipal officials reported 323 daily Covid-19 cases, highest daily count since the pandemic began, on Friday.

Paterson had a peak daily case count of 262 on April 16, during the first wave of the new coronavirus. It has shattered that record multiple times over the past weeks.

On Saturday, the city had 312 cases. On Sunday, the daily case count dropped to 181. Municipal officials attributed the increase to the gatherings that occurred during Thanksgiving.

Some have also suggested the many after-hours parties in Paterson are also pushing up the Covid-19 cases. Councilman Luis Velez had said last week police were not doing enough to crackdown. Over the weekend, police closed down two after-hours joints. Police saw 20 people gathered in one establishment, said public safety director Jerry Speziale.

Municipal officials have put in place a testing regime and a contact tracing program to reduce the transmission of the virus. A midnight curfew is also in place for businesses to curb late-night gathering at bars and nightclubs.

370 people have died from Covid-19 in Paterson.
