Councilman Alex Mendez, who came under attack from mayor Andre Sayegh earlier in the week for not quarantining following a trip to the Dominican Republic, has tested negative for Covid-19.

Mendez was tested on Thursday afternoon.

On Friday afternoon, he provided a copy of his test result to the Paterson Times which showed he tested negative for Covid-19.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests international travelers get tested within 3-5 days and stay home for 7 days. But the quarantine is voluntary and is not enforced in the U.S.

Mendez shot a video outside International High School vaccine site after returning to the U.S. He did not enter the location, he said. He also went to City Hall and appeared at a virtual council meeting.

Mendez dismissed the mayor’s criticism on Wednesday.

Some criticized Sayegh late last year for quarantining for a shorter period of time than recommended by health agencies after he was exposed to someone, who tested positive for the virus.

Sayegh has been backing former councilman William McKoy. McKoy and Mendez are bitter rivals. McKoy has filed a lawsuit seeking Mendez’s removal from office. Insiders say, Sayegh views Mendez as a possible threat in the 2022 mayoral race. But the mayor says he does not view Mendez, who has been charged with criminal offenses for voter fraud in the May election, as a threat.

Mendez came in second place behind Sayegh in the 2018 mayoral race.
