A city man has been arrested and charged with weapons offenses for allegedly having a loaded shotgun, according to public safety director Jerry Speziale.

Stanley Williams, 45-year-old, has been charged with possession of a weapon, certain persons not to have weapons, and criminal eluding.

Williams was arrested on Friday at around 7 p.m. on Lawrence Street and Rosa Parks Boulevard. He was inside a Chevrolet Camaro with temporary New Jersey license plates that was coming out of the driveway of a residence on Lawrence Street.

Police were informed the driver was armed with a high-powered firearm.

Detectives followed the vehicle while waiting for back up to arrive. Police said the vehicle came back to the same 200 block of Lawrence Street it was observed leaving.

As police approached, Williams rolled up his window and began reaching for something on the floor. He also began revving the vehicle at a high acceleration and “recklessly” backed out of the driveway.

Williams “erratically” drove in reverse towards the dead end of Lawrence Street, police said. He came to rest at the dead end in the driveway entrance of a residence after hitting some fencing and a parked vehicle, police said.

But the vehicle continued revving. Police feared the driver would use the vehicle to strike them. They took cover. He was repeatedly commanded to exit the vehicle. He eventually shut off the engine and exited the vehicle.

Police quickly took him into custody. A loaded 12-gauge shotgun and ammunition were seized from the inside of the car.

No one was injured in the brief standoff, police said.

Williams is being held at the Passaic County Jail pending a hearing.
